Australia Day 2006
This year’s Australia Day reception in Mauritius was celebrated at the High Commissioner’s Residence. Some 250 business and government guests joined the President, the Prime Minister, the leader of the Opposition and a further eight Ministers in marking the occasion. The event was catered by the High Commissioner’s spouse, Libby McCutchan and her team of staff and volunteers to produce a classic Aussie menu for the night (including, amongst other items, home made meat pies, Aussie lamb and beef and, of course, lamingtons).
The High Commission was pleased to be able to tease local taste buds by launching Fosters beer, who sponsored the event and which, all going well, will be introduced to the Mauritius market later in the year. Also on display was a promotional stand, which introduced some new Australian products to the media and the guests. The event was well covered in the local media. The Australian High Commissioner, Ian McConville, conducted interviews on national television and in the main weekend French-speaking newspaper where he highlighted Australia’s expertise in the services sector, including education and tourism. Mr McConville’s two eldest children, Sarah and Hamish, who were joined by the Mauritian Police Band in playing Australia’s national anthem, generated considerable media interest.
