Australian High Commission Farewells Mauritius Team to Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games

On 16 February the Australian High Commissioner, Ian McConville and Libby McCutchan hosted a farewell for the Mauritius Commonwealth Games team at his residence in Floreal. The team departed for Melbourne in early March. Attending were representatives from each of the sporting federations, including athletes and administrators, the acting President, His Excellency Raouf Bundhun, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Cooperation, Madan Dulloo, the Minister for Youth and Sports, The Hon Sylvio Tang and the Minister of Housing and Lands, The Hon Asraf Dulull.

At a press conference earlier in the day, Mr McConville said that the Commonwealth Games epitomized the continued and rich exchange at numerous levels which arise from the Commonwealth Games. One example was the participation by a Mauritian representative, Mr Lewis Dick, whose talent as a sculptor has been recognized internationally, and who would be participating in the Common Goods Exhibition.

To underline the special theme of Melbourne, and the connections with the Mauritian community, representatives from 23 Australian Universities and Colleges, with connections to Melbourne, attended the farewell. Their presence symbolized how the Commonwealth Games are about more than just athletes doing their best, but it are also about the development of people-to-people links across different cultures, and promote world understanding and peace.

The Commonwealth Games will be held in Melbourne, Australia for 12 days from 15 to 26 March. The Australian High Commission wishes the athletes of both Mauritius and Seychelles the very best of luck as they compete in Melbourne.
