DIRECT AID PROGRAM (DAP) Projects funded in 2006-2007


The following projects were funded in 2006-2007 in Mauritius, Rodrigues and Madagascar through the Australian High Commission’s Direct Aid Program (DAP). A total of AUD65, 000 was providing as funding.


Mauritius


Book donation for the school library of Soondur Munrakhun College in Long Mountain.
Purchase of equipment for the Abri de Nuit (Night Shelter for the homeless) in Plaine Wilhems. This included the purchase of some blood pressure apparatuses and an industrial extracting fan for the Night Shelter’s kitchen.

Rodrigues


Construction of a Sound Proof Audio testing room for the Gonzague Pierre Louis Special Learning Centre in Camp du Roi, Rodrigues. Funding was provided to help bring major improvements to the only Audio testing centre in Rodrigues that provides treatment for children who have severe or profound hearing impairments.

Madagascar


• Construction of a Primary School in Fokontany Ambohitrinibe, District of Ambohidratrimo – Madagascar. This project consisted of the construction of the very first primary school in region of Fokontany Ambohitrinibe. The region is composed of 5 villages and previously had no schools. Prior to the construction of the primary school in Ambohitrinibe, the closest school was found in Ankazo Andriampianianana which is 40 minutes walk from Ambohitrinibe

• Refurbishment of the school canteen at Nartah College in the village of Ambohitrarahaba – Madagascar. Like many villages in Madagascar, Ambohitrarahaba is home to low income families. The school provides classes to 500 children. Prior to receiving funds for the refurbishment, the school could only provide canteen services for up to 250 children. Now with its newly refurbished canteen, the school can cater for all its students.

Refurbishment of the Sekoly Diavolana Private School in the village Ankaraobato in the district of Atsimondrano, Madagascar. Funding covered the purchase of classroom furniture and equipment.

The purchase of specific children's educational classroom fittings/teaching aids for the Community and Learning Centre in Anosibe, Madagascar.

The purchase of equipment for a sewing centre for the wives and daughters of fishermen in the village of Anakao, Madagascar. The equipment purchased through DAP funds provided has enabled the centre to provide training for women in sewing and dress-making, thereby supplementing the family income.

Construction of a warehouse to stock local produce such as rice and corn in region of Analamanga. Future crops will be protected from insects and adverse weather during storage either for local farmers personal consumption needs or prior to selling. The warehouse will also assist with job creation in the Analamanga region
