Consolidating Education Links in Mauritius

October 2006 was an occasion for the Australian High Commission to celebrate the growing education links between Mauritius and Australia. The catalyst was the two week rotation to Mauritius of 24 Edith Cowan University (Perth) teacher trainees. The Edith Cowan delegation’s principal undertaking was to complete placements in a number of Mauritian primary schools. This is an annual feature of the University’s final year bachelor of Education degree, and has been very well received by the Mauritian authorities in recent years.

The ECU students, however, had other objectives in mind with the aim of broadening education exchanges between the two countries (Australia is now the most popular overseas destination for Mauritian students). The students had raised funds to purchase Australian books to present to needy primary schools in Mauritius. Furthermore, with the collaboration of the Rotary Club of Vacoas, and the support of the Australian High Commission, the ECU students also conducted reading sessions in these target schools, much to the delight of the Mauritian primary schoolers.

On the final evening of the ECU’s Mauritian program, the High Commissioner hosted a well-attended function for the ECU delegation, which included representatives from Government, private and government schools, and education agents. There was excellent media coverage of the event in both electronic and print media.
